Chewing Mane or Tail
This bad habit can be seen in any aged horse but is most common in foals. It may be caused by boredom in an older horse or the eruption of new teeth in a young horse. In a short amount of time a horse can have his entire mane, forelock and tail dramatically shortened if not completely removed by a chewing companion. This leaves the "chewed" horse no means to protect themselves against biting insects until the hair grows back which can be a considerable length of time. It also is unsightly for a horse that may be competing to be missing patches of hair.
The chewer runs the risk of digestive problems, if large amounts of hair were to be swallowed, although this is rare. The ViceBreaker® is a safe, effective way to curb even a young foal's urge to chew on hair and direct his attention toward things that are better suited to be in his mouth.
